Origins of the Three Counties Group

The roots of the Three Counties Bus and Commercial Vehicle Museum go back to 1992 when Dave and Pam Johnson set up The St Albans Bus Garage Heritage Trust, with the aim of saving the ex London Transport bus garage in St Peters Street, St Albans and creating a road transport museum in the garage. Support for the group quickly grew, and four bus rallies were held at the garage in the years 1994 - 1997. Much hard work was done trying to aquire the garage, but in early 1998 the site was developed for housing, much to the disappointment of the group. The garage, the best surviving example of the 1930's Holden / Pick style was demolished in late 1998.

New ideas were then hatched for a permanent home for buses and commercial vehicles in the area, with Dave and Pam Johnson again to the fore. The group who had originally formed the core of the St Albans Project now started making plans for the Three Counties Bus and Commercial Vehicle Museum group. A meeting was held on November 15th 1999 at the Royal British Legion in Heath and Reach, Bedfordshire, with invitations sent out to prominent local vehicle preservationists. At this meeting the group was officially formed and a committee elected. A timetable of events was drawn up, and the first meeting of the group, in December attracted over 30 people, many of whom joined on the night. The Three Counties Bus and Commercial Vehicle Museum Project was now under way.
